Addresses Nested USPSPrimaryNumber String

Accept postal corrected/updated address elements in positions 40-136 with the caveat that the accuracy and recency of these elements can be determined by other codes on this layout.

Accuracy is a function of the "Deliverability Indicator" in position 152. If your address could not be found on USPS databases, these address elements may be parsed pickups from your input data, with no improvement.

Leverage "NCOA Move Effective Date" in positions 25-30, and "Nixie A, B and C" to determine if your record is still at this address.

Addresses Nested USPSPreDirectional String

Accept this pre-directional ("East Main St," and so on).

Addresses Nested USPSStreetName String

Accept this primary street name.

Postal processing typically "corrects" submitted street names that are either "Aliases" (valid, deliverable, but variant names: as Rt. 17 in NJ passes through each small town, it is often given a different name for that stretch, like "Veterans Highway") or "Alternates" (totally different versions of the same address: "10th and Main" or "Superior Bank Plaza" instead of 330 Main St.) to what USPS considers the "base" name.

D&B has decided to ignore such "corrections". If your input primary street name was valid, it has been retained, unless your address changed as a result of being a positive NCOALINK match, or a LACS match.

Addresses Nested USPSStreetSuffix String Accept this suffix ("East 10th ST," and so on).
Addresses Nested USPSPostDirectional String Accept this post-directional ("10th St West NW," and so on).
Addresses Nested USPSUnitDesignator String Accept this secondary address unit designator ("STE 2400," and so on).
Addresses Nested USPSSecondaryNumber String

CONSIDER accepting this secondary #: suite, apartment, floor, and so on when using this field to update a customer file.

Remember that USPS "Best" secondary number is where the mail gets delivered not necessarily exactly where in a building your actual client is located.

Any internal delivery information you have on your record such as mailstop numbers, attention lines, department names, and so on, used by a company's/institution's internal mail delivery system will not be considered in "Best Secondary Number" and must be retained otherwise you may be making a deliverable address internally undeliverable.

If this field is blank, and your input had a secondary number, USPS says that the secondary address you input is unnecessary for delivery of mail at this location.

Addresses Nested USPSCity String

Accept this city name.

Postal processing typically "corrects" a valid submitted city name that has no post-office to a nearby city name where mail is actually received and sorted. D&B has decided to ignore such "corrections" and has retained valid input city names, unless your record was a positive match to NCOALINK and has a new city.

Addresses Nested USPSState String

Accept this state abbreviation.

Addresses Nested USPSZip5 String

Accept this ZIP.

Addresses Nested USPSZip4 String

Accept this ZIP+4.

Addresses Nested USPSDeliveryPointBarcode String

Numeric Delivery Point Barcode: If and when mailing at automation rates, this data is needed to create a barcode.

If you plan to use this field for mailings, update just before mailing or do not maintain this data, and allow your lettershop to append the latest information just before your mailing labels are created.

Addresses Nested USPSLineofTravelCode String

Alphanumeric Line Of Travel Code: Useful if/when mailing at automation rates.

Addresses Nested USPSAAMatchFlag String

Matched to ZIP+4? A: Yes, Blank: No.

If your record got a "Blank" here, you have a record that could not be standardized, and it may be undeliverable.

"Best" address fields populated primarily/all with data as submitted.

Dump "Blank" records for visual review to see if they can be salvaged, perhaps by using the D&B address on an accepted match.

You may not have gotten a ZIP+4 because more than one data element was squeezed into a field, and so on something that might be very obvious on review, but which fooled the correcting software.

Addresses Nested USPSDSFMatchFlag String

Matched to DSF?

  • B = Business Match to DSF
  • C = Consumer Match to DSF
  • Blank = Your address did not match to the DSF2 database at DSF Deliverability Indicator 1, 2 or 3.
Addresses Nested USPSDSFSort String

T = Even though this delivery point is a street address, mail is delivered to the customer's PO Box.

Blank = No Sort Instruction Code.

Addresses Nested USPSDeliverabilityIndicator String Likelihood of delivery to this address, from highest to lowest:
  • _x000D_1 DSF2 MATCH (Also valid ZIP+4, and DPV = Y): deliverable if name of firm is correct, and firm still at this location.
  • _x000D_2 DSF2 MATCH (Also valid ZIP+4 and DPV = S): match to a street delivery point which has suite/apt. # information unnecessary for delivery of mail.
  • _x000D_3 DSF2 MATCH (Also valid ZIP+4 and DPV = D): match to a valid default "high-rise" address (5 or more internal deliveries) where the required suite/apt. # is missing.

More deliverable in towns and small cities than in major metro areas where carriers are encouraged not to look at building directories for suite #s. These are the values considered to be "deliverable".

The remainder of the codes can be found in the code table.

Addresses Nested USPSDSFDeliverabilityType String
  • A-D = Residential
  • I-L = Business
  • X or Blank = no delivery-type info.
  • A-RESIDENTIAL CURB-side mail receptacle

  • D-RESIDENTIAL OTHER: such as door-slot delivery
  • I-BUSINESS CURB

  • K-BUSINESS CENTRAL

  • Q-GENERAL DELIVERY: mail is picked up at a USPS facility
  • X-EXCLUDED FROM DELIVERY STATS: DSF match, but no delivery type info available; usually new addresses with delivery type TBD
  • Blank = BLANK DELIVERY TYPE: did not match DSF OR no info.
Addresses Nested USPSDSFVacancyIndicator String
  • Y = Yes, delivery point has been vacant for at least 90 days.
  • N = No, Blank = Unknown.
  • E = Educational address so may be vacant when school is not in session.

Compare this information with date of your last interaction with this record if it was less than 45 days from date of DSF2 processing, ignore "Y."

This is a dynamic indicator, and may be applied as soon as a letter carrier notices that mail is overflowing a mailbox. Our own research indicates this flag is accurate about 50% of the time.

Addresses Nested USPSDSFSeasonalIndicator String

Y = Yes, mail is received only during a specific season (no other details available).

N = No

Blank = Unknown.

E = Education facility. Not a highly populated or well-maintained element.

Addresses Nested USPSDSFDropIndicator String
  • N = No
  • Y = Yes (non-commercial "drops" are single delivery points or receptacles serving multiple firms or families: a door slot serving more than one firm or family, a boarding house, a frat house)
  • Blank = Unknown
  • C = Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA): mail is delivered to a company street address, like a "UPS Store", where it is then sorted into private mailboxes.

The address has what may appear to be a USPS box number, but commercial mailbox numbers must be preceded by either "PMB" (commercial mail drops in high-rises must use PMB) or "#". We see some CMRAs advising their customers that they can use the word "suite" to precede the "#" and number, so these addresses may appear to be a customer's location. Think twice about extending credit to a "business" using a PMB.

Addresses Nested BDNCorrectionOpportunityIndicator String

A single character code indicating whether the customer-supplied address, having gone through our multi-step postal process, and still being flawed, can be further corrected using the matched D&B address.

For this indicator to be valid, a basic condition must be met: the matched D&B address must be the same location as the cleansed address.

The D&B match could have just a similar but unrelated or even a completely different address.

When the MatchGrade is "F" for the building number and street, or for the city or state, the two addresses (yours and D&B's) could be unrelated.

Also, even when the MatchGrade is "A" or "B" for those fields, and the Match Data Profile (MDP) code for those fields indicates a match to a former or home address, the "C = Correction" indicator could be invalid, because the matched D&B address could be completely different than the cleansed customer address.
